We are not a political organisation, but there is a time to be silent and there is a time to speak up.
Systemic racism is not a political issue, it is a human rights issue.
The worldwide feelings around Black Lives Matter are at an all time high, and it falls to people of all races to support it and cause change.
We understand that educating ourselves is our responsibility and one we do not take lightly.
At SC FIT, we believe that Black Lives Matter.
We know and understand that the head of social media at CrossFit.com is a staunch BLM supporter, so we were as disappointed as everyone else when their public statement on June 5th did not openly acknowledge BLM.
CrossFit, as a company, is surprisingly small but has an impressive reach through the affiliate model and the CEO’s views are not representative of our views, and we vehemently oppose them.
Regardless of what name we have above the door, we know that we will continue to work on our vision, and we will be constantly reviewing our ongoing relationship with CrossFit.
Whatever direction we move in, we will always be guided by our own morals and values.
We have been working for years now to create a safe and inclusive space and as a company, our values include:
– Doing the right thing, regardless of how hard it may be,
– Being a force for good and leading by example, and
– Having humility to know when you need to ask for help.
We’ve taken some time to listen and start to educate ourselves about the wider issues of systemic racism in the US and in the UK – we know that we have a lot more to learn and that there’s a lot more we can do. We’d love to open some dialogue with people who feel the same way that we do and learn about how we can all do more together.
One thing we do know for sure is that there’s no place for racism, or any other kind of discrimination (even if this statement is not about anything else), at SCCF.
We are confident that our members are supportive of our views and we thank them for being the good people that they are. We will continue to grow together and use this as a catalyst for change.
