SCFIT CrossFit Community Event: September Malvern Hike

We are now just less than two weeks away from SCFIT’s special CrossFit Community Event: our team hike in the Malverns! On Sunday 29th September we’re taking our fitness out of the gym, and heading to the beautiful Worcestershire Malvern hills. This fresh-air excursion will replace the usual gym classes that day, and is a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow SCFITters and enjoy the beautiful British countryside.

If you’re thinking about joining us and putting your functional fitness into real-life action, read on to find out the key details!

Who can come?

If you’re a member, friend, family or partner of a member, you’re invited! This hike is open to anyone in the SCFIT community – that includes you!

When and where?

Sunday 29th Sept, meet at 8am at the gym! Or, if you’d rather meet us there, we’ll be meeting at the North Quarry Car Park.

How is everyone getting there?

A number of the crew will be driving, so if you’re left without a ride, drop a note on the post in WODBoard and see if you can share a ride with a fellow SCFIT member! We’ll meet at the gym first thing in the morning to facilitate car sharing before heading down to Worcestershire for the hike.

What should I bring?

  • In terms of a kit list, we recommend wearing:
    • Comfortable, supporting hiking boots or trail shoes. If you have ones with ankle support, go for those!
    • High walking socks (to prevent rubbing and any nettle stings)
    • Comfortable walking / fitness clothes
    • Layers! Even if we luck out with sunshine, it can be chilly up high on the hills, so pack layers
    • A waterproof / windproof jacket
    • A hat / headband
  • Then, bring with you:
    • Water
    • Snacks
    • A fully charged phone
    • Plasters, and if you’re super serious about safety – a little first aid kit!

Why is it called a CrossFit Community Event?

So what makes a hike a CrossFit community event…? We’re so glad you asked. At SCFIT, we’re proud of our CrossFit community, and what better way to celebrate the friendships forged and group we’ve created than enjoying a community event in the outdoors! In terms of it being a CrossFit event – CrossFit is described as ‘constantly varied functional fitness’ – so a hike well and truly meets that description!

Fitness in 100 Words

You might’ve heard of the famous ‘Fitness in 100 words’ – a few sentences shared by CrossFit’s founder Greg Glassman that capture CrossFit’s essence and methodology. In case you’re not familiar with it, here it is:

“Eat meat & vegetables, nuts & seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise, but not body fat. Practice & train major lifts: Deadlifts, cleans, squats, presses, C&Js, and snatch. Similarly master the basics of gymnastics: Pullups, dips, rope climbs, pushups, situps, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, row, swim, etc. hard and fast. Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.”

Note the key phrase here: regularly play and try new sports. We love seeing the fitness our fellow SCFITters gain from CrossFit, and the new experiences and adventures it allows them to take on. Just this year we’ve seen members hike Machu Pichu, complete marathons, and summit Kilimanjaro! The Malverns may not quite be the tallest mountain on an exotic continent… but it’s still an exciting and brilliant expression of fitness!

See you there!

So there is it – September’s big community hike! If you have any questions just reach out to the SCFIT team. We can’t wait to see you there.
