How fit do I need to be to start training?

The question of how fit you need to be to start exercising / training / working out is a tough one. Some people see other people doing something that they’d like to do and make the assumption that doing that is only for people who can do that thing already.

But that couldn’t be further from the truth!

Imagine if we replace some of the words in the title question….

  • Should you wash your car before you take it to get valeted?
  • How good do you need to be at playing the piano before you go for lessons?
  • How much debt do you need to be in before you should do something about it?

Hopefully those examples are so obvious to you that they’re almost insulting – you wouldn’t make sure you could play an instrument before going for lessons! And hopefully you’re managing your money in such a way that debt problems aren’t something that you have to worry about. Why would you wash your car before paying someone to valet it?

So now we’ll move back into the world of health and fitness via a proverb about trees…

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

If we accept the ancient Chinese proverb about planting trees to be true, then now is the best time that you have to start making real gains in your health and fitness. Unfortunately you can’t go back 20 years and change what happened then or change any of the decisions that you’ve made in the intervening years, but you can start to look forwards and think about where you’d like to be in the next 20 years…
