How to pick a gym – part 3

You’ve probably heard of CrossFit, but what 4 things do you need to bear in mind when searching the internet for a nearby gym?  Over the next few posts, we’ll make sure that you know what to look for and what to avoid…

Maybe you’ve seen fit people lifting big weights on Instagram. Maybe one of your friends from work goes to CrossFit after work every day. Maybe you even have friends who won’t stop talking about it.  Maybe you’ve seen some of the CrossFit.com documentaries on Netflix!

So you’ll probably want to know what all the fuss is about and you might have even put “CrossFit near me” into Google…

But before you fall down the Google rabbit hole, please make sure that you consider these four things 4 when searching for “CrossFit gyms near me.”

Number 3: Ask, “Do the CrossFit gyms near me offer nutrition coaching?”

Yes, some gyms purely trade on access to space and equipment, but the best gyms in your area should offer nutrition coaching as one of their core services.

Health and fitness can be developed in a gym (or at home) with physical effort, but real health and fitness is underpinned by nutrition and a healthy relationship with food.

Greg Glassman, the founder of CrossFit, defined fitness in 100 words: “Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: deadlift, clean, squat, presses, clean-and-jerk and snatch.

“Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics; Pull-ups, dips, rope climbs, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstands, pirouettes, flips, splits and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc. hard and fast. Five or six days per week, mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.”

Whilst you’re not going to be tested on that, it is worth noting that the first ¼ of the words are all about nutrition.  Nutrition comes before getting out of breath.  You can survive without exercising (although you probably don’t want to) but you can’t survive without food and water!

Over the years we’ve been open we reckon that a solid nutritional foundation is the most common missing ingredient when it comes to getting the results that people want.  We see supercharged results in all of our nutrition coaching clients, and that can’t just be a series of coincidences!

The most commonly cited reason for people quitting the gym is that they haven’t been seeing results.  But we all know that you can’t out train a bad diet, so why not combine the power of good nutrition and potent exercise in one place?

So rather than just hitting up Google with a couple of searches and then moving on, do a bit more research – it’s your health that is on the line!
