Is HYROX Suitable for beginners?

Are you seeing all the HYROZ buzz, and wondering…. is HYROX suitable for beginners? Spoiler alert… yes, HYROX is absolutely ok for beginners! But if that isn’t enough – read on to find out more about what HYROX is, how it works, and what to expect from your first HYROX class!

What is HYROX?

Let’s set the scene first of all, and cover the basics. Perhaps you’ve found yourself here because you’re already a member at SCFIT, or maybe you’ve been following what we do, and haven’t taken the plunge just yet with CrossFit, but the idea of HYROX has piqued your interest! Or maybe you’ve heard about HYROX but have no idea what it actually is, and would love to know what the hype is about. Whatever your reason – you’re in the right place.

HYROX is a global fitness racing event, with races taking place in various cities throughout the UK and worldwide! The event is fixed – much like a set distance triathlon or marathon – so you know exactly what is required, and will have the same fitness experience (aside from a few factors like the circuit route, and weather!) wherever you take part. The event is a ‘sandwich’ of 1000m running intervals with various functional fitness stations between, including ergs (rowing machine, ski-erg), sled drags and pushes, lunges and carries. Check out the HYROX event homepage for a full breakdown!

Is it all about the HYROX Race?

It started out that way, for sure – a brand new exciting fitness event born in 2017, quickly popularised around covid times, soon become a worldwide fitness phenomenon. Athletes of all levels were eager to get involved and try their hand (and legs) at the event, seeing how they ranked against their peers, and eventually, the rest of the world!

Flash forward to 2025, and it’s no longer just about the event: sure, HYROX racing events are still growing in popularity, and securing a ticket is becoming a sport in itself! BUT in recent years it has become so much more than just another fitness event, and is instead becoming a whole way of fitness training.

What is HYROX training?

It should come as no surprise of course that HYROX training is designed to prepare you to take part in a HYROX event, but as a training programme, it is proving to be increasingly popular with existing fitness fanatics and exercise beginners alike. HYROX is considered to be ‘low barrier to entry’; you don’t need to have a certain fitness level to start, and you don’t need any previous experience of any of the movements to be able to join a class. Seriously! This ‘accessible’ nature is one of the many factors that makes HYROX so appealing, and such a fantastic choice for fitness beginners.

Similar in some ways to CrossFit, HYROX uses functional movement patterns (lunging, squatting, picking things up) and has a strong underlying element of cardiovascular training. The large amount of running makes it a popular choice for runners, as their background typically gives them a solid foundation for the HYROX events. Even the running itself is low-barrier too though; whilst the overall distance might feel daunting at first, running the entire event is not compulsory (there’s nothing stopping you from walking, if needed!) and the interval set up means that running beginners can take breaks with the other movements, compared with an all-running endurance event such as a 10km, or half marathon.

What does a HYROX class consist of?

So we’ve covered an overview of the training – but what would a HYROX class actually look like?

You can expect to see a full body warm up, including specific movement preparation for that session’s exercises. You’d then likely receive some specific coaching on a particular movement, to help you develop some of the skills and movement patterns. Perhaps this will mean spending time refining the burpee technique, or an introduction to sled pulling, and the different methods of actually holding and pulling the rope. You’ll then move on to the ‘workout’, where the coach would provide a set sequence to follow. This will likely include interval based work, adopting movements you’ll see in a HYROX event, and possibly some similar exercises too (such as use of Bike Ergs) and / or movements to help develop muscles that will be used in other movements (eg, performing box jumps to help build power for the burpee broad jumps).

So… Is HYROX suitable for beginners?

Yes! You’ll be coached each step of the way, and will have options to adjust the workout to suit your experience, fitness level, and how you’re feeling on the day!
