What is the prescriptive model of health and fitness?

The prescriptive model of health and fitness is the one we use to get faster results for people.  It’s one that removes wasted time and instead lets people focus on exactly what they need to get what they want.  We touched on this briefly recently here.

Over the past 8 years that we’ve been open we’ve worked with a whole range of people on a whole range of goals.  Some people have been trying to get leaner ahead of their wedding day, some people have been focused on building size and strength for a sport.  We’ve seen people come to us who wanted a competitive outlet and we’ve seen people who want to build their self confidence up.

Fortunately over the past 8 years we’ve learned a lot and our staff have developed a wide range of strategies to work with a whole range of people.

To better explain what the prescriptive model of health and fitness is, an analogy works really well:

Imagine that you are sick and you go to the doctor’s.

You explain your symptoms and they discuss these with you.  They might do some testing to get some more information.

They then use the information you’ve given them (and that they’ve found) to prescribe something for you to get better in as quick and as safe a way as possible.

Compare the following:

  • “Hey doctor, I’ve got this crazy ear pain and it hurts when I roll over in bed.”
  • “Can I have a look in there to see if I can see anything?  Looks like you’ve got an ear infection.  Has your routine changed recently?”
  • “I have been swimming a lot more than usual lately.”
  • “Okay, so you need to keep your ear as dry as possible for 2 weeks and use this spray three times a day for the next 7 days to clear up the inflammation.”
  • “Thanks, I’ll do that”

To this:

  • “Hey doctor, I’ve got this crazy ear pain and it hurts when I roll over in bed.”
  • “Can I have a look in there to see if I can see anything?  Looks like you’ve got an ear infection.  Has your routine changed recently?”
  • “I have been swimming a lot more than usual lately.”
  • “Okay, keep doing whatever you want and I’m sure at some point it’ll go away.  I’ve got this big range of medicine that you can choose from as well – I’m sure if you take some of it then it’ll deal with the problem.  But I’ll let you choose which ones to take, how often to take them and how long to take them for because it’s your ear.”
  • “Erm, thanks, I guess.  Maybe I’ll just have to live with this ear infection forever now…”

Why do you go to the doctor?

You go there because you trust their knowledge and you trust that they will give you the best and fastest course of action to deal with your current problem and get you back to full health.

So why go to a gym where you get no guidance on anything?  Where you’re left to make all your own decisions and no one guides you? Where you can go but make no progress?

Why not go somewhere where you’ll be given a plan of what to do, when to do it, how much of it to do and also have why you’re doing it explained to you? Where people who care about you will be with every step of the way.

When it’s phrased like that it seems like a no brainer right?
