THE OPEN IS COMING…

The 2022 CrossFit Open is almost upon us, and the question on everyone’s lips is… what are we doing at SCFIT?

Let’s rewind a little, in case this whole ‘Open’ business is new to you.

What is the CrossFit Open?

The CrossFit Open is the first qualifying stage for the CrossFit Games. So…what are the CrossFit Games? Check out our recent blog article which explains what it is, and what we know about the 2022 season so far!

Crucially though, the CrossFit Open is exactly what it says on the tin: open. Open to all!

How does it work?

Each week for three consecutive weeks (starting Thurs 24th Feb) a CrossFit workout is released – usually at 5pm Pacific time, so the workout typically reaches us in the UK in the early hours of Friday morning! Participants in the Open have until the following Monday to complete the workout and submit their score online to be verified.

What’s so awesome about it?

That ANYONE can give it a go. You don’t need to be famous or sponsored to enter, nor do you need to ‘know’ anyone or have bags of money. So… in theory, the winner of the CrossFit Games really could end up being any Joe Bloggs who has a knack for CrossFit! There are also dozens of specialist categories tailored to different age groups (including Master and Teens), as well as various Adaptive categories, meaning there really is a version for everyone. We love the inclusive nature of the Open, and are so excited to be hosting something special for the Open at SCFIT once again this year.

How can I sign up?

If you’d like to register for the official CrossFit Open, the sign up process can be found here and it’ll cost you just $20 to get your name on the leaderboard… along with hundreds of thousands of other people just like you from all over the world! It’s pretty awesome to see where you stack up against your fellow CrossFitters in the gym, the country, or even the world!

Do I need to sign up to the ‘actual’ CrossFit Open?

No – if you like recording your progress year on year and take an interest in where you might rank against your peers, then it’s well worth the few dollars it costs to sign up, but if you’re just looking to join for a bit of fun, then that’s absolutely fine too! You can still join in on the Intramural Open at SCFIT just the same!

So what are we doing at SCFIT?

Here’s the exciting part. At SCFIT, we run the ‘Intramural Open’. We’ve appointed a few of our wonderful members to captain three teams, named after three US locations of the CrossFit Games in previous years. Your team captains are as follows:

Team Madison: Ema Fallon and Jack Jeffrey
Team Carson: Nina Jones and Alex Ward
Team Aromas: Jamie Tate and Darren Turner

Think of them like the big teams we have at our in-house Throwdowns… but even bigger! Team members can be awarded points in various ways, but you’ll notice the focus is on getting involved – not winning! Here is a highlight reel…

  • 3 points for completing the workout at Friday night lights
  • 2 points for judging someone from another team
  • 2 points for doing the workout at anytime over the weekend
  • 1 point for judging someone from your own team

…And there will be bonus points awarded at the coaches discretion for anyone that truly embraces the community spirit and goes above and beyond!

Talk to me about Friday Night Lights…

‘FNL’ will start on that first Friday of the Open, the 25th. It’s a chance for members to come down to the gym and give that week’s Open workout a go! Heats will be run throughout the evening so participants can select a time that suits them. We will record videos for warm ups and tips and tricks for completing the workout, and of course all the coaches will be on hand to help and answer any questions you may have. It’s an absolutely buzzing, exciting atmosphere, and is a fantastic opportunity to bringing the community together, as well as giving members a snapshot at their current fitness level!

How do I register for the SCFIT Intramural Open?

You can let us know if you’d like to take part by either following this link or scanning one of the QR codes in the gym.

Regardless of who you are, or how fit you are right now, we’d encourage all of the SCFIT members to sign up and get involved – because it’s a total blast!

And as always… if you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to ask – we are here to help!
